CALIFORNIA

Say ‘California’, and many people think of Hollywood or the beaches. And, while those are surely one-of-a-kind, California has even more to offer. California’s Pacific Coast Highway (Hwy 1), runs mostly along the coast 655 miles from the incredible redwoods and sequoias up north, to Dana Point and the legendary surf beaches of San Diego in the south.

In between? World-class wine regions, San Francisco, Big Sur, Monterey Bay Aquarium, Santa Barbara, and Los Angeles. The Spanish missions here date back hundreds of years. The museums, whales, sea lions, and William Randolph Hearst Castle at San Simeon are some of the things to not miss.

And the food? It’s as good as the views. Maybe even better. How about a cocktail and some oysters overlooking the ocean in Malibu? Or how about an amazing organic meal in San Francisco where culinary delights come straight from local gardens.

Go inland, and there’s even more of California to explore: Lake Tahoe, Ojai, Big Bear, the music festival at Coachella, Joshua Tree, Palm Springs. Here, California is full of deserts and mountains perfect for skiing, hiking and even listening to music!

I’ve skied there. I’ve surfed. I’ve run the trails in the Santa Monica Mountains, hiked the hills of San Francisco, backpacked through the Sierras, and played golf at Pebble Beach. But it’s hard to beat riding down PCH in a convertible with the sun setting over the ocean.
